The Fall of American Evangelicals

American evangelicals tired of getting kicked around in America hitched their wagons to Trump. Trump appealed to their weaknesses, their besetting sins, their vanity. He appealed to their desire for power. Angry with Christ because his Sermon on the Mount calls them to be humble servants of Christ, the call of Trump beckoned them to leave everything they had with Christ and follow him(Trump).

Did Trump deliver? Many would say he delivered on many issues evangelicals hold dear. Mike Evans wrote, “…kept and exceeded his promises to us.”“We considered our relationship with him transactional… We wanted Supreme Court justices to overturn Roe v. Wade. We wanted his support of our biblical values.”

The transaction allowed a narcissistic man devoid of empathy for his fellowman to be President in exchange for delivering on what some Christians hold dear. Is Trump a modern day Cyrus or Nebuchadnezzar? No, Trump is not a Cyrus called to the throne to work out the purposes of G-d but a man who divided a nation and took what little faith some Christians had and stomped on it. Trump is an unrepentant Nebuchadnezzar. No amount of humbling of Trump by G-d will produce anything good. Trump has more in common with Satan who calls Christians everyday to do a transaction with him. Remember Christ in the wilderness:

Next the devil took him to the peak of a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. “I will give it all to you,” he said, “if you will kneel down and worship me.”“Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him. “For the Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the LORD your G-d and serve only him.’” Matthew 4:8-10 NLT

Again let us hear the words of Evans: “kept and exceeded his promises to us.”

At least Evans woke up when he wrote, “But those rewards came with a price: “We had to close our mouths and eyes when he said things that horrified us. I cannot do that anymore.”
